Spanish Fiesta Staff

The Spanish Fiesta staff is a passionate group of people who enjoy Spanish language and its culture. They are well aware of students' unique developmental stages, from 3 to 103 years old!

Carina Giusti

Carina is from Argentina. She holds a M.Sc. in Education from Penn State University. She also has a Bachelor's degree in Education from UNLP (Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina), is certified as a school teacher by the Instituto Nacional de Ensenanza Superior La Plata, Argentina, and graduated from the Adult Education program of the Instituto de Educacion de Adultos, La Plata, Argentina.

She was the founder and director of the Instituto de Educacion Recreativa in La Plata, Argentina, a school for children from preschool - 12 years old who wanted to do their homework plus daily new learning "from 3 corners": art, music, and movement/corporal expression. It ran through the school year and summer.

After completing her M.Sc. and working as a FITCAP counselor at Penn State University, she embarked herself on a 10 month adventure by car through the 3 Americas (North, Central and South): from Pennsylvania to Argentina! She will re-live that adventure with the big kids at summer camp this year during animal week.

She has also taught Spanish in Australia: all levels and all ages, from private classes to schools (e.g., the Latin American Saturday School) and institutes (e.g., at the Migrant Resource Center in Canberra she taught Spanish for community workers, at the Hobart Women Health Center she taught Spanish for health providers).

Due to the fact that she accepted a governmental position she returned to Argentina as a Senior Minister's Advisor on Child and Youth Welfare Issues, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.

She moved to the U.S. four years ago and has been teaching at Runnels School as well as doing private tutoring and adult classes. She is also on call as an interpreter for Women's Hospital and does translation work, such as working manuals for MacAlister's Deli.

Gabby Hance

Gabby is an outstanding student in Spanish 3 in Carina’s class at Runells High School. She recently went on a trip to Spain, gaining valuable insight into Spanish culture and honing her language ability. By the end of the school year, she will be certified by the American Heart Association in the Heart saver CPR program in schools. She will be joining the Summer Spanish Camp as a student helper for the entire four weeks! She is passionate about languages, especially Spanish, and loves to be with kids. She is a big plus in the summer program.

Heidi Stevens

Heidi is originally from Paraguay and has been in Baton Rouge with her family for several years. She and her two boys will be participating in the summer camp, she as a volunteer mom. We are very happy to have her.

Lauren DeWitt

Lauren is also in Spanish 3 with Carina at Runnels. Her mom is from Argentina and therefore Lauren has been exposed to Hispanic culture and is able to bring that experience to the summer camp. She is a brilliant student and a unique participant in our program. This summer will be her third year working as a camp counselor at camp Kol Bo, a day camp for 3-7 year olds. Also, this summer she will be participating in a week long camp for kids with disabilities. She will be our student worker for the first two days (July 7 & 8) and the last week of summer camp. By the end of the school year, she will be certified by the American Heart Association in the Heart saver CPR program in schools.

Susana Costela

Susana is an exchange Spanish teacher in East Baton Rouge Parish. She comes to us from Spain. Thanks to her we will have Spain brought to our camp on a daily basis. OLE!

She holds a B.A in English Literature and Linguistics from Universidad Complutense Madrid, Spain. She also has a Master Degree in Translation: English-Spanish / Spanish-English, and an ABD in English Literature, from Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Spain.

Her work experience ranges from being a Spanish teacher at Mckinley Middle Magnet School in Baton Rouge to, in Madrid, an English Teacher, Foreign Languages Department Head at Vallmont Bilingual School, and School Principal K–12.

She has been in Baton Rouge for a year and is looking forward to participating in the Fiesta Summer Camp. Her broad experience as a language professional, her creative mind and her friendly personality make her a great asset. She and her two daughters will be with us during the entire camp.

Adam Turner

Adam Turner is a junior at Runnels High School and is in his 4th year of Spanish. This summer, he will be participating in Concordia Language Camp's total Spanish immersion program where he will gain insight into the Spanish culture. Adam's family history is rich in both the Spanish and Italian language. His maternal grandparents were from Guadeloupe, Mexico and Ancona, Italy. Adam recently received his CPR adult and child certification from the American Heart Association. He also runs Cross Country and plays Soccer year round. Adam is a member of the Beta Club. Adam is a dedicated and self-motivated student in Carina's Spanish class. He is an excellent male role model for any boy particicpating in the camp.

Hannah Connelly

Hannah is a senior at Runnels School. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her entire high school career. Hannah is a member of the National Honor Society and Youth Legislature and was Vice-President of her Junior class. She has taken three years of Spanish at Runnels. During Mardi Gras of 2005, Hannah traveled to Costa Rica with her family and was the "translator." She was able to effectively communicate with the locals in Spanish. Hannah also has eleven younger cousins, so she is great with kids! We are very fortunate that she can be with us during the 2nd week of the camp (July 14-18) and the first three days of week 3 (July 21-23).
